The First Five Minutes

Dentistry is mostly listening. The rest is patience.

Alexia Kwan spends the first five minutes of every appointment not touching anyone’s mouth. She sits. She watches how the person settles into the chair. She asks what brought them in. It is the part of dentistry she cares about most, and the part she believes earns everything that follows.

The habit has a source. Before she opened her own practice, she spent nearly a decade in one-on-one mentorship under an experienced implant and cosmetic clinician. What she took from it was not technique, or not only technique. It was a specific way of paying attention.

The principle that underwrites everything is simple: early intervention is the dentistry she chooses. A cavity filled on time is a crown she does not need to design. A child who learns to brush at six is a patient who will not return at forty with a problem that could have been caught. It is unglamorous dentistry, but it is the dentistry she practises.

A cavity filled on time is a crown she does not need to design.

She graduated from NUS in 2009, spent three years in hospital rotations and military dental services, and then spent nearly a decade under that single mentor. By the time she became Director at Align Dental Surgery in 2022, the shape of her approach was already set. The practice she now runs is an extension of that long view.

Where She Focuses

Dr. Alexia practises across the full range of general dentistry. Most of her patients come to her for one of three things: cosmetic work, Invisalign, or paediatric care. The six cards below are her practice, in brief.

Invisalign Clear Aligners

A clear alternative to metal braces for children, teens, and adults. Computer-designed clear aligners move teeth gradually into position, without brackets or wires. Available from age eight through Invisalign First.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Porcelain veneers, dental crowns, bridges, and professional teeth whitening. Dr. Alexia’s main area of clinical interest, developed through nearly a decade of focused training and mentorship.

Dental Implants

A long-lasting foundation for permanent or removable replacement teeth, matched to the patient’s own teeth. Dr. Alexia assesses whether implants are the right approach case by case.

Paediatric Dentistry

Fifteen years of working with children, from gentle first visits and preventative care to growth monitoring and early orthodontic intervention via Invisalign First or traditional braces.

Wisdom Tooth Surgery

With options for intravenous sedation in clinic or general anaesthesia in an operating theatre, drawing on the surgical experience developed during service with the SAF dental services.

General Dentistry

Routine check-ups, hygiene appointments, fillings, root canals, and extractions. Every option explained in plain language; every decision made with the patient, not for them.

The Invisible Kind

Good dentistry disappears. That is the goal.

Good dentistry, Alexia Kwan will tell you, disappears. The patient notices the result, not the process. Invisalign was designed around the same idea, which is why it sits at the centre of her practice.

The system uses removable, virtually invisible clear aligners, custom-designed by computer modelling, to move teeth gradually into position. No brackets, no wires, no dietary restrictions. Patients wear the aligners for 20 to 22 hours a day, removing them to eat and brush. Most people around them never notice.

For adults, the discretion is often the deciding factor. For teenagers, it can be the difference between treatment and no treatment at all. For children as young as eight, in the mixed-dentition stage, Invisalign First guides early jaw development without the hardware of traditional braces.

Most people around them never notice.

She has been a certified Invisalign provider since 2016. In 2019 she completed the Aligner Intensive Fellowship, a 45-hour programme spanning a year, under Dr. Moshiri and Nicozisis, and was subsequently coached by Willy Dayan and Sarah Lawrence. The layered training extends the same logic as the decade she spent under her cosmetic mentor earlier on: techniques accumulate slowly, and the range of cases she can treat widens with them.

Some patients need an expander alongside the aligners. The Invisalign Palatal Expander widens the upper jaw gradually to create space for proper alignment. It removes the discomfort of metal fittings and the hassle of daily screw adjustments, and is straightforward for a child to insert and remove.

For young patients

Paediatric dentistry in her practice begins before the instruments come out. It covers first visits and acclimatisation, sealants and fluoride applications, ongoing monitoring of jaw growth and bite alignment, and, when the time is right, orthodontic intervention through Invisalign First or traditional braces. Alexia is candid about the choice: both have their place, and she decides collaboratively, with the child’s comfort, the clinical picture, and the family’s preferences in view. The clinic supports this with a dedicated nursing room for families with infants and a non-clinical environment inside Forum The Shopping Mall that most children find reassuring.

Five Steps, No Surprises

Every appointment follows the same shape. The shape is deliberate.

01

Consultation & Conversation

The appointment begins with talk, not instruments. Your dental history, your concerns, what you hope for. Alexia takes time to understand the person, not only the teeth.

02

Examination & Assessment

A thorough clinical examination follows. Every finding is explained out loud; where imaging is taken, you see what the dentist sees. No jargon without a translation, no decisions made around you.

03

Treatment Planning

If treatment is recommended, the options are laid out plainly: what each involves, the expected timeline, recovery, maintenance. No pressure. The decision is always yours.

04

Treatment & Aftercare

Procedures are carried out with careful attention to comfort. Sedation is available for more involved treatments. Aftercare instructions are clear, and the clinic remains reachable by phone or WhatsApp if questions arise.

05

Ongoing Relationship

Dental care does not end when you leave the chair. Follow-up, preventative maintenance, and an open line of communication keep things on track. Alexia’s practice is built for the long view.

Before the Clinic

Alexia’s day starts before the clinic does. Before anyone sits in her chair, she is on a yoga mat. The practice is not decorative. It is what keeps her hands steady for the nine hours that follow.

Then there are the huskies. Two of them, full of energy and opinions, who ensure that no morning is ever too serious. They are, she will tell you, the real bosses at home. Anyone who has met a husky will find that entirely believable. She keeps a public Instagram at @dralexiakwan.

Frequently Asked Questions
What services are available at Align Dental Surgery?

The clinic provides general dentistry (check-ups, hygiene, fillings, root canals, extractions), cosmetic dentistry (porcelain veneers, crowns, bridges, teeth whitening), Invisalign clear aligners for adults, teens, and children from age eight, dental implants, wisdom tooth surgery with sedation options, and paediatric dentistry from first visits through to early orthodontic monitoring.

Do I need to book an appointment?

Appointments are recommended. Booking can be made by calling +65 6773 7088 during opening hours, or by WhatsApp at +65 8877 0788. Walk-ins may be accommodated where the schedule allows, but a booked slot ensures Dr. Alexia has time to review your dental history and discuss your concerns before any treatment begins.

Does the clinic accept dental insurance?

Yes. Align Dental Surgery offers direct billing with major Singapore dental insurance providers. Bring your insurance details to the appointment, or check with the front desk by phone or WhatsApp before booking to confirm coverage for the treatment planned.

At what age can children start Invisalign First?

Invisalign First is designed for children in the mixed dentition stage, typically from around age six to ten. Suitability depends on the stage of jaw development and on which adult teeth have emerged. A consultation with Dr. Alexia, including clinical assessment and a review of growth patterns, determines whether Invisalign First, traditional braces, or continued monitoring is the right step for your child.

Is sedation available for dental procedures?

Yes. For patients who prefer a more comfortable experience, arrangements can be made for intravenous sedation within the clinic, or general anaesthesia in an operating theatre for more complex surgical cases. Dr. Alexia discusses the options, risks, and recovery details during the treatment planning conversation so that you can choose the approach that suits you.

How long does Invisalign treatment typically take?

Treatment duration depends on the complexity of the case and on patient compliance with wear time. Aligners should be worn 20 to 22 hours per day, removed only for eating and cleaning. Mild cases may complete in six to nine months, more complex cases in 18 to 24 months. Dr. Alexia provides an estimated timeline after clinical assessment and the digital treatment scan.

Is the clinic accessible for wheelchairs and families?

Yes. The clinic features wheelchair-accessible seating and a wheelchair-accessible restroom, and a dedicated nursing room is available for families with young children or infants who need feeding, changing, or a quiet space. Forum The Shopping Mall is step-free from the Orchard Road entrance, with lift access to unit #01-07/08/09.

Who else is on the dental team?

Dr. Alexia practises at Align Dental Surgery alongside fellow Director-level Senior Dental Surgeons. Patients seeking orthodontic consultation as part of their treatment planning may also speak with Dr. Priyanji de Silva. All dental surgeons at the clinic are registered with the Singapore Dental Council.

What are the opening hours?

Align Dental Surgery is open Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and Saturday, 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The clinic is closed on Sundays and public holidays. Urgent dental enquiries outside opening hours can be left on WhatsApp and will be responded to when the clinic reopens.
